Coast Guard Port Security Unit 308 on deployment in Cuba supporting Operation Enduring Freedom

March 1, 2015

Just a few days into the new year, members of Coast Guard Port Security Unit 308 stood in formation on the tarmac at Stennis International Airport before deploying to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Members of the all-reserve unit, based at Stennis International Airport, are supporting Operation Enduring Freedom by helping maintain a continuous maritime force protection presence in the Naval Defensive Sea Area of Guantanamo Bay.

At the time of the Jan. 5 deployment, Cmdr. Ronzelle Green, PSU 308 commanding officer, said, "For two years we've been preparing for this moment and this time."

The unit's duties include patrolling the waters in and around military facilities and working and training alongside other branches of the military. The unit's deployment is for up to one year. Members have previously deployed to Bahrain, Port of Ash Shuiaba, Kuwait and Guantanamo Bay.

PSU 308 is designed and trained to deploy in 96 hours to give their support to maritime security missions anywhere in the world. They provide port security in support of military and humanitarian operations worldwide.  Personnel train during weekend drills and normally participate in either an exercise or specialized training during two weeks of annual active duty.
