HCPHC Installs Rail Signals on Lower Bay Road

Last weekend the Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission activated two lighted rail signals on Lower Bay Road near the entrance to Port Bienville Industrial Park. The lighted signals with barrier arms replace stop signs at the two locations. 

“The rail signals will allow Hancock County residents who drive Lower Bay Road unrestricted travel across our tracks until the signals flash and the arms come down,” said Bill Cork, chief executive officer of the Port and Harbor Commission.

Funding for the rail signal project came through a Mississippi Department of Transportation grant and internal Port and Harbor Commission funds.

The Port and Harbor Commission owns and operates the Port Bienville Short Line Railroad which moves more than 15,000 rail cars carrying 500,000 tons of materials and cargo annually for the park’s industries.

The port’s rail system can accommodate 286,000-lb. railcars and offers trans-load service, railcar storage and switching. It connects to the CXS rail freight transportation line 40 miles east of New Orleans.
