Stennis Airport begins north apron expansion

January 12, 2022

KILN, MISS. – The Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission recently began a concrete apron expansion project at Stennis International Airport.

The $2.6 million project will add 68,880 square feet of space to the north apron. Like the aprons and runway throughout the airport, the new apron will be constructed to carry the world’s heaviest planes.

“The project will increase operational capacity for aircraft parking for both operators based here and transient traffic coming into the airport,” said Chanse Watson, airport director. “The expanded apron will also allow for future hangar development on the northernmost airport parcel.”

The project includes a new access road to Texas Flat Road. A specialized landing zone will also be built to allow for emergency landing training for rotorwing aircraft.

The project was fully funded by a 2020 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant and CARES Act match. It was awarded to Huey P. Stockstill LLC, of Picayune, and is expected to be completed this spring.

“Investments like this ensure Hancock County’s community airport remains a premiere destination for commercial, general aviation, military and industry partners,” said Bill Cotter, Hancock County Port and Harbor CEO. “We appreciate the continued support of Congressman Palazzo, Sen. Hyde-Smith, Sen. Wicker and the FAA for making the project possible and their support to make Stennis International the cornerstone of Mississippi’s aerospace industry.”

Located in Kiln, Stennis International is Hancock County’s community airport. It features an 8,500-foot runway rated to carry the world’s largest cargo planes. It is home to 15 aerospace companies serving commercial, general aviation and military aircraft.
