From the Executive Director: Military’s presence, partnerships contribute to our economic stability

March 1, 2015

The idea for March's newsletter came from a quote I recently read from well-known author Tom Clancy. Explaining Americans' duty to support the United States military, Clancy wrote, "The U.S. Military is us. There is no truer representation of a country than the people that it sends into the field to fight for it. The people who wear our uniform and carry our rifles into combat are our kids, and our job is to support them, because they're protecting us."

After reading Clancy's words, it occurred to me how little is commonly known about the extensive military presence in Hancock County.  While many people know about the wealth of industrial infrastructure that exists in Hancock County, few likely realize the breadth of military operations, infrastructure and support services that call Hancock County home.

This month, we feature information about the wide array of Hancock County's partnerships with the United States Department of Defense. From the Navy's extensive investment at Stennis Space Center to the Air Force and Coast Guard presence at Stennis International Airport and the ongoing training operations that occur here, Hancock County owes much of its economic stability to the men and women of America's Armed Forces who live and work within its borders.

We would also be remiss if we failed to mention that one of Hancock County's most well-known industries, Lazy Magnolia, celebrated their 10th anniversary this month at their brewery located within Stennis International Airpark. Lazy Magnolia is a gleaming example of the entrepreneurial spirit in Hancock County, and the Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission is proud to congratulate the entire Lazy Magnolia team for 10 great years of successful operations.

We thank all of you for your continuing efforts to make Hancock County the premiere place to do business in South Mississippi. We look forward to our ongoing partnership with you as we take Hancock County to new economic horizons and beyond.
